Dear Cucamonga School District Families,

March is Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the amazing achievements of women throughout history! But have you ever wondered how this special month began and why we observe it today? Let's take a journey into the past and learn more about it together.

How Did Women’s History Month Begin?

It all started as a one-week celebration in 1980, when President Jimmy Carter declared the first official Women’s History Week. Schools and communities recognized the contributions of women in history, and soon, there was a growing demand to expand the celebration. In 1987, Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month, making it a nationwide observance!

Why Do We Celebrate?

For centuries, the contributions of women were often left out of history books. Women’s History Month gives us the opportunity to honor and learn about the incredible women who have shaped our world—scientists, artists, leaders, and everyday heroes who have made a difference.

Fun Facts!

  • Did you know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize—and she won it twice?
  • The first computer programmer in history was a woman named Ada Lovelace, way back in the 1800s!
  • In 1920, women won the right to vote in the U.S. after years of hard work and activism.
  • Sally Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983—she was also a big fan of science and math!

The month of March was chosen for Women’s History Month because of International Women’s Day on March 8th, a global celebration of women's achievements.

Let’s celebrate the achievements of women and inspire our students to dream big! Thank you for being part of this important month of learning and reflection.

Take Care,

Michael Chaix, Ed.D.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL
By Principal Narrie Gavares

Get ready to travel back in time! Our TOCS fifth graders recently brought history to life with their incredible "Walk Through the Revolution" activity. This dynamic program transformed our school into a bustling scene from the American Revolution. Students stepped into the shoes of iconic figures, recited historical speeches, and participated in exciting re-enactments. They explored key events, learned important vocabulary, and truly grasped the significance of liberty and patriotism. From waving colonial flags to studying detailed maps, every aspect of the experience was designed to engage and educate. It was a truly immersive learning adventure that our students will remember for years to come.

The "Walk Through the Revolution" has become a beloved tradition at our school, and this year's fifth grade class did an exceptional job! We were so proud to see them confidently deliver their lines, demonstrate their historical knowledge, and fully embrace the spirit of the revolution. The energy was contagious, and it was clear that everyone was having a blast while learning. A huge thank you to our dedicated teachers and parents who helped make this event such a resounding success. We are thrilled to see our students connecting with history in such a meaningful and memorable way.
