Dear CDS Families,

In our district, we believe that history is not just a collection of dates, but a source of inspiration that shapes who our students are becoming. As we move into the final stretch of February, it is our privilege to reflect on the profound impact of Black history on our nation and our local community.

Our Portrait of a Graduate initiative aims to equip every student with traits like resilience, innovation, and leadership. There is no better way to illustrate these values than by looking at the lives of those who have paved the way for progress.

I am pleased to share the following update from our Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) Director, Mrs. Williams, regarding our upcoming celebration week. We invite you to join us in honoring these legacies as we continue to invest in the bright futures of all our students.

Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring the Legacy, Inspiring Our Future

Extended Learning Opportunity Program

As we approach the final week of February, our district is proud to highlight the rich history and enduring contributions of Black leaders, artists, and innovators. Our schools will be engaging in a special Black History Month Celebration Week from February 23rd through February 27th. 

During this week, students across the district will hear daily announcements and participate in activities centered on figures who exemplify our Portrait of a Graduate traits. 

We are excited to feature:

• Feb 23: Barack Obama
• Feb 24: Maya Angelou
• Feb 25: George Washington Carver
• Feb 26: Serena Williams

We will conclude the week on Friday, February 27th, with Black Excellence Day. We invite all students, staff, and families to join us in wearing shirts that honor Black trailblazers and innovators.
